Phil initially studied Sociology, where photography first piqued his now-lifetime passion by analysing how images are created rather than merely taken. This is his cornerstone to every project, looking at individual elements, the set, light, and subjects and how these combine to tell a story.
His personal projects have utilised BBC sound effects, circus performers and an imaginative journey into the world of allotment holders. His projects include still life and motion and are often described as playful and humorous with a wink to a darker element.
Over the last 20 years, Phil has photographed established artists such as Mark Rylance, David Byrne, David Hockney, Julie Walters, Kenneth Branagh, Ruth Wilson and Brian Cox, plus newer, emerging talent like Dua Lipa, Dave, Daisy Edgar Jones, Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn and Aimee Lou Wood.
His longstanding series for BAFTA, titled "For the Love of Film", is a continuing series of portraits celebrating people involved in the film industry. Most recently, he photographed award-winning costume designer Sandy Powell.
His commissioned work includes campaigns for Channel 4, ITV, SKY, MTV, Paramount+, National Theatre and ENO.
His campaigns for Sky also include a directors credit for on-air commercials for Curfew starring Sean Bean and many of these campaigns have involved directing motion for social media and digital 6 sheets.
Phil has been recognised globally for his award-winning photographs shooting for magazines in Europe, Australia and syndicating portraits worldwide. Twice finalist in the AOP Awards and a Gold Winner in 2019. Included in last year's Portrait of Britain. And his short documentary The Grove was included in the 2023 London Short Film Festival at the ICA. The documentary can be seen here.
