Phil Fisk - Observer / Neneh Cherry

Phil Fisk shot these gorgeous portraits of "celebrated musician and all-round creative powerhouse" Neneh Cherry for Observer, describing her as "a whirlwind of energy and good vibes that infected the whole studio". Phil is "still reeling from the hugs"!

Neneh's memoir “A Thousand Threads” is out now.

Huge thanks to Observer for the commission and fabulous styling - and to hair and makeup artists Shamara Roper and Hila Karmand 💫

Chris Floyd - Idler / Richard Hawley

CHRIS FLOYD shot these fabulous portraits of singer/songwriter and guitarist RICHARD HAWLEY for the new issue of THE IDLER.

28 years ago I did a series of single sleeves for a band called Longpigs. They were art directed by Pat & Jo Skinny, and the band left the three of us alone to do what we liked. It was the perfect creative partnership. In March of this year I went up to Sheffield for the day to photograph that band’s guitarist, Richard Hawley, who I had not seen since a night in Paris in 1996. We did some pictures at The Samuel Worth Chapel in the Sheffield General Cemetery. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon in the pub listening to Richard’s amazing stories of his life in music. It was the perfect way to spend a day.”

Phil Fisk - John Smith / The Living Kind

PHIL FISK shoots JOHN SMITH, one of the UK’s “finest guitarists and songwriters”, for his new album THE LIVING KIND, recently released on Commoner Records.

They “endured rogue dirt bike riders and the rough winds of Sheerness together” to create this beautiful series of atmospheric portraits ✨

Chris Floyd - Jack Savoretti / Miss Italia

CHRIS FLOYD recently shot these wonderful portraits with singer/songwriter/musician JACK SAVORETTI for his new album ‘MISS ITALIA’ (his first-ever-all-Italian-speaking album connecting Jack with his Italian heritage, and a “simply stunning” tribute to his late father).

Chris and Jack captured the portraits “with just a camera and an 85mm” on the streets of Milan and we love the results 🙌✨

Phil Fisk - Observer / Thurston Moore / Sonic Youth

Phil Fisk recently captured these beautiful portraits of US indie-rock band Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore at his home in south London for Observer.

Moore is “now officially a grand old man of American indie rock – though as (his recently published autobiography), Sonic Life attests, his youthful enthusiasm for all things rock’n’roll remains relatively undimmed”.

We are loving the mood and tones of this series. Super lovely work 🙌

We’re super proud of you Phil! 🙌🙌🙌

Phil Fisk - Dave Rowntree / Blur / Observer

Earlier this month, Observer Review commissioned Phil Fisk to shoot Dave Rowntree, drummer from Blur, who recently released a solo album "Radio Songs".

The shoot took place at Tate Modern, with special permission to feature artist Cildo Meireles' artwork 'Babel 2001' - a huge structure of live radios which were all on and tuned in when we did the shoot. ✨

Chris Floyd - Idler / Lawrence (Felt / Denim / Go-Kart Mozart / Mozart Estate)

Chris Floyd was commissioned by Idler to capture this awesome series of portraits of pop legend Lawrence at his flat near Old Street in London just before Xmas 2022.

Lawrence is, "the reclusive would-be superstar behind the cult 80s indie band Felt, the 90s Britpop pioneers Denim and the noughties “b-sides only” outfit Go-Kart Mozart. Returning as Mozart Estate, Lawrence has put such topical themes as poverty, homelessness, mindless consumerism and the rise of the cashless society to a novelty pop beat on his first masterpiece, 2023’s Pop-Up! Ker-Ching! And The Possibilities of Modern Shopping".

Chris Floyd - Jo Whiley

Everybody Dance Now!! ⚡️✨

“Photo Maestro” 🤩 Chris Floyd shoots these gorgeous portraits of superstar DJ, Jo Whiley for You Magazine - to celebrate her hugely successful “90s Anthems” tour.

Such a vibrant commission and wonderful job by all the team 🙌

Phil Fisk - Belle Chen

PHIL FISK recently shot these gorgeous portraits of pianist, composer and rising star BELLE CHEN, whose work, "pinballs between avant-garde, classical, electronica, sound art and various sonic practices."

Her music is often performed on "prepared piano (temporarily altered prior to performance by placing bolts, screws, mutes, rubber erasers, and/or other objects on or between the strings), as well as melodica, synthesizers and found sound.”

The team drew reference to Bjork’s enigmatic style, bringing a less clichéd classical aesthetic to Belle’s portraits - with styling by Vic Twyman and makeup by Rebecca Hampson 🙌✨

Phil Fisk - Mike Skinner

Phil shoots Mike Skinner… the subject of a short film (/rockumentary) he’s been working on since 2019, with the first teasers being released in the new year ⚡️.

Phil describes Mike as a “professional disruptor. Dictator, denier and destructor. The king of trash, prince of darkness, the founder of the Cannibals. The loser of his mind. One of a kind. Master of his own downfall and slave to the rhythm of rock n roll. [and also] My neighbour. 👍”

The film promises to be a captivating journey into Mike’s life. We can’t wait to watch!

Chris Floyd - Leona Naess / If A Song

In the mid-lockdown summer of 2020 CHRIS FLOYD shot this lovely film with his good friend, singer/songwriter LEONA NAESS on a remote mountain track in Switzerland.

Here are some very moving words from Leona about the experience... "Thank you @chrisfloyd for jumping on many trains to get to me during the summer of lockdown. All we had was a camera, the mountains and our imagination. I wish I had taken a photo of Chris laying on top of the car, holding his camera (without a steady cam) while someone drove it down a rocky fire road. The concept - we shed our layers as we grow and become, while we are busy chasing our dreams and the people we love. In the end, we learn that we have to let them go, in order to figure it out on our own. I guess the video is a metaphor for growing up. Nothing brings that harsh reality to light more then losing both your parents. I wanted this song to be empowering and anthemic. To inspire someone to get going with living. Its not sad. It’s a force!!!"

It’s now the new single from Leona’s gorgeous, melodic album ‘BROOD X’.

Phil Fisk - Dry Cleaning / Observer

Observer commission Phil Fisk to photograph these beautiful portraits of poetic post-punk band DRY CLEANING, the group "everyone seemed to discover in lockdown".

Their first album was released to rave reviews, swiftly becoming Rough Trade's Album of the Year. This shoot marks the release of their second album Stumpwork on 4AD.

Phil loved meeting and shooting the band and was delighted to learn about #metalhand... (Florence demonstrates in picture 1!)

Chris Floyd - Brian Johnson | AC/DC / Telegraph

Chris Floyd was recently commissioned to shoot these wonderful portraits of rock icon and AC/DC lungsman Brian Johnson in his local London boozer for the Telegraph Magazine. Johnson is celebrating the publication of “The Lives of Brian”, described as a “riotous, lovable memoire, packed with outrageous stories” ⚡️

Chris Floyd - KSI / Men's Health

Knowledge Strength Integrity

Chris Floyd shoots rapper/boxer/joker/all-round entrepreneur KSI for Men’s Health.

"KSI is, to many of his fans, a modern-day polymath and 21st-century renaissance man. If you’re over 25, however, he may well be the most famous person you’ve never heard of.... Having made his name via YouTube skits and gaming commentary, KSI's ventures to date have earned him in excess of £15 million. He has more than 40 million subscribers across his three channels and his 2019 boxing match against fellow YouTuber Logan Paul was one of the top five highest selling-fights in history. KSI is 29 years old."

Huge thanks to all the team involved in creating these wonderful portraits 👏

Chris Floyd - Not Just Pictures

Flock are thrilled to announce the publication of CHRIS FLOYD "NOT JUST PICTURES"

A stunning, first monograph dedicated to Chris’s 30-year career, published by Reel Art Press and released this week!!

Featuring over 200 photographs, it includes his sessions with Paul McCartney, David Attenborough, Debbie Harry, David Hockney, David Bowie, Marcus Rashford, Cate Blanchett, Oasis, Iggy Pop and many more. The photographs are accompanied by a collection of stories that paint a broader and often funnier picture of his oeuvre.

In Chris’s words… “For a long time people have told me how much they love reading what I write, as much as looking at the photographs I produce, and that they would love to own a book of this work and these tales. After nearly 30 years in the game, perhaps now is the time to parlay the most interesting, funny, odd, disturbing, confrontational, collaborative and life affirming photographic moments.

"The man can talk. And he can write too. His book [is]... a handsome showcase for some of his most thrilling work. I can think of many excellent photography books, but none that pulls off this trick so convincingly; showing you the picture, and then, like a rogue magician, lifting the curtain and taking the reader behind the scenes for a glimpse of the delicate negotiations that went into its making."
Esquire

Every picture tells a story… and below is a small selection of the portraits featured in the book (each with a delicious tale to accompany it).

From L-R: Milla Jovovich, Anthony Bourdain, David Hockney, Blondie, Yoko Ono, Bill Murray, Aisling Bea, Helen McCrory, Thom Yorke, David Bowie, Robbie Williams, Oasis, Tina Fey, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, David Attenborough, David Bailey, Robert de Niro and Nobu.
