PHIL FISK - OBSERVER / Makers

MEET THE MAKERS 🙌

PHIL FISK shot this lovely series for OBSERVER Food focussing on "the artisans who help make eating out magical".

Beautiful lighting and sensitive portraits as always, captured on location with ROB WOOD c/o Music Concierge, ceramicist SKYE COREWIJN and tanner JACK MILLINGTON of BILLY TANNERY.

Phil Fisk - Observer / Harriet Walter

Beautiful portraits from PHIL FISK’s recent shoot for OBSERVER with actor HARRIET WALTER.

Star of stage and screen, she has had roles in shows ranging from Succession and Ted Lasso to Killing Eve and on stage is one of few female actors to play both a king and queen of England.

Harriet has now also published a book entitled “She Speaks! What Shakespeare’s Women Might Have Said”.

Phil Fisk - Inside Out / Anniah

The second in a series of a short films by PHIL FISK entitled INSIDE OUT, showing the perspective of people’s inner lives on one side of the window and that of the outside world on the other. The films are deliberately shot in portrait format to fully frame the window.

ANNIAH is a young aspiring actor, who Phil found through a local theatre group - this was her first time acting on camera.

Thanks also to Martin at The Lemonade Factory and Vic Twyman for props and set dressing 🏏!

Phil Fisk - Inside Out / Tina

Introducing a series of a short films by PHIL FISK entitled INSIDE OUT, showing the perspective of people’s inner lives on one side of the window and that of the outside world on the other. The films are deliberately shot in portrait format to fully frame the window.

The first features TINA, Phil’s friend and a podcaster who talks a lot about mental health, so this vignette is in harmony with how she lives her life.

Thanks also to Martin at The Lemonade Factory, Vic Twyman for props and set dressing and the amazing make skills of Corrine Robinson for Tina’s extra sparkle ✨!

Phil Fisk - Salt Thinking / healthcare

First glimpse of a stunning new commission captured by PHIL FISK for SALT THINKING for a worldwide campaign for a blood cancer treatment.  Shot over 2 days with 3 models, we created a contemporary, positive visual language for the product launch.  Colour and gradations all caught in camera to ensure perfect synch with the moving image sequences.

We are really proud of this beautiful body of work 🙌.

Huge thanks to ALL our wonderful team including stylist Vic Twyman, DOP / editor Adrian Wolfson and Ela Calin for her awesome retouching.

And also to Perma Collective for another fabulous, low impact production. (They also helped us to visualise the emissions generated by the shoot, which worked out at just 6% of the industry average.)

Phil Fisk - Observer / Neneh Cherry

Phil Fisk shot these gorgeous portraits of "celebrated musician and all-round creative powerhouse" Neneh Cherry for Observer, describing her as "a whirlwind of energy and good vibes that infected the whole studio". Phil is "still reeling from the hugs"!

Neneh's memoir “A Thousand Threads” is out now.

Huge thanks to Observer for the commission and fabulous styling - and to hair and makeup artists Shamara Roper and Hila Karmand 💫

Phil Fisk - Observer / Ibrahim Nash'at

"The secret service asked to see my footage. I left the same day"...

The Observer commissioned Phil Fisk to capture these compelling portraits of documentary-maker Ibrahim Nash'at, who was embedded with the Taliban after US forces fled Kabul in 2021, whilst creating his fly-on-the-wall documentary, Hollywoodgate.

Described as “a darkly comic, damning insight into the regime", this astonishing documentary has been a hit at film festivals - featuring scenes of the Taliban exploring some of the “$7bn worth of equipment left behind in Afghanistan when the US made its hasty departure … everything from tactical fighter jets and M16 rifles, to a fully equipped gym and a fridge loaded with Jägermeister and Johnnie Walker Red Label.”

As always, Phil captures thoughtful and beautifully poignant portraits of his sitter.

In the words of Ibrahim, "The power of the camera I’m holding is as strong as the weapon they hold in their hands, maybe even much stronger."

Phil Fisk - The Globe / Winter Season '24

Phil Fisk was commissioned by Shakespeare's Globe to create this beautiful campaign for their Winter Season '24 - featuring Cymbeline, Three Sisters and All's Well That Ends Well. Moving image to follow soon..

Concept, art direction and production by the amazing team at The Globe, set & prop styling from the treasure trove that is the Globe props store c/o Vic Twyman, hair & makeup by Elena Diaz, wardrobe by Melanie Brookes 🙌

Phil Fisk - Observer - Honey and Co and co

Phil Fisk captures gorgeous summery tones in this recent commission for OBSERVER featuring chefs SARIT PACKER and ITAMAR SRULOVICH (aka HONEY & Co.) judging picnic foods, food journalist / restaurateur RAVINDER BHOGAL tasting ice-creams, and sommelier HONEY SPENCER rating rosés. Whilst chef/author/activist/TV presenter Ravneet Gill "rates offbeat crisp flavours, from haggis to oyster and vinegar"... 🦪.

Sunshine styling by Vic Twyman 🌞🙌.

Phil Fisk - Observer / Luca Guadagnino

Delighted to share these portraits of Italian film director/producer LUCA GUADAGNINO (Call Me By Your Name, A Bigger Splash and the recently released Challengers) - captured a little while back by PHIL FISK for OBSERVER.

Phil Fisk - Observer / The Years

Phil Fisk recently shot the cast of a new theatre production of Nobel-Prize winning author Annie Ernaux’s acclaimed autobiography "The Years" (currently showing at London's Almeida Theatre) for Observer.

Photographed here are the awesome ANJLI MOHINDRA, DEBORAH FINDLAY, GINA MCKEE, HARMONY ROSE-BREMNER and ROMOLA GARAI.

There was only a short set up time on location at the beautiful Dally members club on Upper Street, but sensing the actors were all comfortable in each others presence Phil was able to capture these gorgeous shots of them together. 🙌✨

Phil Fisk - HSBC / HNIV

HEY HUMAN commission PHIL FISK to shoot this beautiful campaign for HNIV, the investment arm of HSBC.

“The shoot was a heady three days with over 30 models. Starting at Shoreditch Studios we shot a mix of black and white portraiture whilst utilising the other studio textures for portraits that could feel more real. The agency wanted a bright feel throughout to incorporate the HNIV overlay and though this was easily achieved in the studio it would be harder work in the location spaces.”

“Styling and props were all overseen by VIC TWYMAN and her team who somehow pulled it all together in a short space of time and with a decent recce we were able to light and redesign the empty offices into multiple scenarios so quick it was like a dream. Big thank you to Peyo Alvarez and Emma Pottinger for sweat, blood but thankfully no tears!”

Phil Fisk - Tom Burke / Guardian

PHIL FISK shoots these striking portraits of actor TOM BURKE for GUARDIAN, in anticipation of the release of FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA in cinemas this week.

Phil Fisk - John Smith / The Living Kind

PHIL FISK shoots JOHN SMITH, one of the UK’s “finest guitarists and songwriters”, for his new album THE LIVING KIND, recently released on Commoner Records.

They “endured rogue dirt bike riders and the rough winds of Sheerness together” to create this beautiful series of atmospheric portraits ✨

Phil Fisk - Cornelia Parker / Guardian

PHIL FISK shoots CORNELIA PARKER “one of Britain's best loved and most acclaimed contemporary artists” for OBSERVER.

Cornelia is captured with her favourite work in The National Gallery - The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck. The painting has inspired her since she was a student… “In the flesh it’s quite small but immaculately painted.”

This beautiful, mellow-hued portrait was taken in the window of calm and quiet before the gallery was open to the public. We love the subtle gestures and pose and the pale trim running from the canvas through Cornelia’s dress. Such a beautiful shot 🤩.

Phil Fisk - Hoyte van Hoytema / BAFTA X For the Love of Film

Phil Fisk - Observer / Kano + Kaluuya

Oscar winner – and now director, DANIEL KALUUYA – and rapper and Top Boy star KANE ROBINSON, aka KANO, are longtime friends. Photographed together here by PHIL FISK for OBSERVER on the release of their new movie, dystopian thriller THE KITCHEN (in selected cinemas and on Netflix).

Phil’s stunning portraits capture the intensity of these two outstanding actors, as well as a hint of the mischief that comes with their close friendship 🙌✨

Phil Fisk - Observer / Thurston Moore / Sonic Youth

Phil Fisk recently captured these beautiful portraits of US indie-rock band Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore at his home in south London for Observer.

Moore is “now officially a grand old man of American indie rock – though as (his recently published autobiography), Sonic Life attests, his youthful enthusiasm for all things rock’n’roll remains relatively undimmed”.

We are loving the mood and tones of this series. Super lovely work 🙌
