Phil had the pleasure to photograph Paula Rego in her studio for The Observer recently. Paula was born in Portugal in 1935, studied painting at the Slade in 1952 with Lucian Freud as her tutor and began exhibiting in the 1960s alongside David Hockney and Frank Auerbach, Paula has always been fascinated by fairytales and much of her pastel work reflects cruel fables and folklore with women at the epicentre. She is one of our greatest living painters and her work is currently exhibiting in Paris at the Musée de l’Orangerie till mid January 2019. Go see!

Chris Floyd always has a story to tell when photographing celebrities. Experienced, confident, swift and above all charming on set. Here, in his own words is what happened when he photographed Robert De Niro.
When he walked in I introduced myself to him but he never introduced himself to me. Just a short but not unfriendly “heyhowyadoin’”. More of a statement than a question. At a certain point during the course of the shoot he becomes distracted by a series of questions from one of his business advisors. The clock is ticking so I have to say the guy’s name to get his attention and get him back to the matter at hand. But what do I call him?
For a good two minutes I’m turning it over in my head. The publicist had referred to him as ‘Mr de Niro’ but I thought I’m not going to call him that. What else? Robert? Bob? Bobby? Scorcese always calls him Bobby. We’re not at that level of familiarity yet, maybe I should split it down the middle? Respectful but not overawed. So finally, I take the plunge and say it.
“HEY BOB!….” and he looks back at me and says “Yes Sir!” with a small salute.
It is with great pleasure to share these wonderfully honest and authentic portraits of Gary Barlow taken by Chris at Wormwood Scrubs late in the afternoon on Midsummer’s Day with barely a soul around.

Phil experimented with torchlight for this portrait, and ended up throwing the magnesium paper as close as possible to John Richardson’s head, in order to light the shot! John is a well known Special Effects Artist who worked on the James Bond, Harry Potter and Alien films, so he was pretty nonchalant about the potential fire hazard!
For this portrait, Phil photographed Neil Gorton in his workshop who runs Millennium FX the largest Special Effects and Prosthetics company in Europe. Neil was behind the prosthetics for Ex Machina, Saving Private Ryan and Children of Men.
