Phil had the pleasure to photograph Paula Rego in her studio for The Observer recently. Paula was born in Portugal in 1935, studied painting at the Slade in 1952 with Lucian Freud as her tutor and began exhibiting in the 1960s alongside David Hockney and Frank Auerbach, Paula has always been fascinated by fairytales and much of her pastel work reflects cruel fables and folklore with women at the epicentre. She is one of our greatest living painters and her work is currently exhibiting in Paris at the Musée de l’Orangerie till mid January 2019. Go see!

A colourful ongoing personal project by Phil Fisk inspired whilst building his new studio and office space. Working with Mark, a carpenter and builder (and a Goldsmiths Fine Art Graduate), Phil began to appreciate the aesthetic properties of his trade and the materials and tools Mark used whilst around the building. This grew into documenting all the tradespeople who came to work on the new studio. The textures and colours of their tools and materials dictated how Phil then composed the portraits.
Photographed on location at the William Morris Red House in Bexleyheath for the Observer Magazine, Phil Fisk captures the elegance of Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine. The pre-raphaelite location is clearly the perfect place for Florence, with stunning gardens in full bloom and wonderful interiors in the historic house.
Stunning personal still life work from Phil Fisk in association with Vicky Twyman combining biology and food. Inspired by the visual language of cellular photography, they built their own internal dreamy, fleshy, fruity world where colour meets texture.
This portrait was the only image in the set which was shot in two places, Norfolk and in a London studio with the Spectre and Moonlight actress, Naomie Harris.
Make Up Artist Morag Ross who initially studied mural design at Glasgow School of Art before falling for make up and training with the BBC after graduating.
Award winning Make Up Artist Sian Grigg looking resplendent on her local beach in Wales. Sian has been working in the industry for almost 20 years. She worked with Leonardo Di Caprio on the Titanic in 1996 and with him in every film since including the harrowing The Revenant.
Phil photographed Dan Lemmon ,Visual Effects Artist (The Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes, Fight Club) on the set of War of the Planet of the Apes amongst the 70k square foot giant green screen set, showing the importance of capturing raw footage when working with cgi. One of the few Still Life images from the set shows the farmer's minute head (from the Farmer's Llamas) and his many expressions. These were photographed at the Aardman studios in Bristol.
The idea behind the portrait of Terry Gilliam, (Director of 12 Monkeys, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Brazil,) was based on the idea of a journey, and Max on the cover of ‘Where the Wild things Are.”
Phil experimented with torchlight for this portrait, and ended up throwing the magnesium paper as close as possible to John Richardson’s head, in order to light the shot! John is a well known Special Effects Artist who worked on the James Bond, Harry Potter and Alien films, so he was pretty nonchalant about the potential fire hazard!
For this portrait, Phil photographed Neil Gorton in his workshop who runs Millennium FX the largest Special Effects and Prosthetics company in Europe. Neil was behind the prosthetics for Ex Machina, Saving Private Ryan and Children of Men.
Using the technique of low lighting, Phil was able to use fast shutter speeds to create this portrait of Keir Beck, Stunt Performer and Coordinator who worked on films including Mad Max and Casino Royal.
