Phil Fisk - Allotment Eccentrics / The Alchemist

Delighted to share the 3rd and final part of Phil Fisk's beautifully crafted, atmospheric and other-worldly 'Allotment Eccentrics' series, created in collaboration with super-talented stylist Vic Twyman.

Here Phil turns his lens on potting shed alchemist Pedro (who insists his English friends pronounce it “Peyo”).

His story is told below...

Peyo has always hankered for a simple life. Originally from the Basque region of Spain but with French ancestry he has always felt like a nomad and travelled the world after university, working in bars and restaurants, gradually losing any motivation to pursue the product design he had studied for. In 2008 he was knocked off his motor bike, sustaining severe concussion and a lengthy time in hospital. A generous insurance payment bought him a period of reflection and he applied for an allotment, initially to stretch out the money and start living off the land but its appeal grew like his plants and quickly enveloped him. These new cultivation skills and constant reading inspired him to investigate the world of herbal medicine and to start making his own remedies. His back and arms still ache but his natural medicines and gentle digging are working to alleviate it. He thinks of himself as an alchemist although has no desire to create gold, just a simple ambition to use the natural properties of minerals and herbs to create change in himself and those around him.

Joseph Ford - Canon

Joseph spent several days on location in Avoriaz in the French Alps, shooting this beautiful commission for the launch of Canon's new EOS R6 Mark II.

Working alongside the film crew, he captured stills of action photographer Teddy Morellec putting the camera through its paces, alongside speed flyers (/adrenaline junkies!) Ugo Gerola and Ambroise Serrano and mountain biker Louise Ferguson. 🙌 ⚡️

Kellie French - Sali Hughes / Guardian

Kellie’s work has focussed on beauty for the last few months, creating some stunning content for Sali Hughes’ iconic weekly beauty column in the Guardian.

The picture editors wanted her to devise a series of images with a modern, conceptual and humorous taken on beauty photography. The brief gave Kellie lots of freedom with her ideas and executions, and we absolutely love the results!

The images focus on a range of concepts… from L to R…

wavy hair / strong hair / saving money with a beauty subscription / glass highlighters / Christmas fragrances.

Huge thanks to all the Guardian team and to Sarah Cherry for the amazing hair & makeup. ❤️💥🔥

Phil Fisk - Dave Rowntree / Blur / Observer

Earlier this month, Observer Review commissioned Phil Fisk to shoot Dave Rowntree, drummer from Blur, who recently released a solo album "Radio Songs".

The shoot took place at Tate Modern, with special permission to feature artist Cildo Meireles' artwork 'Babel 2001' - a huge structure of live radios which were all on and tuned in when we did the shoot. ✨

Kellie French - Anita Bhagwandas / Guardian

Kellie was recently commissioned by the Guardian to shoot this striking portrait of Anita Bhagwandas, an award-winning journalist, beauty editor and broadcaster; to accompany a feature on her new book ‘Ugly’. As always, Kellie brings a considered and creative take on the subject-matter.

We've all had those moments. The ones where you look in the mirror and nothing feels ok. For Anita Bhagwandas, this started when she was a child and it created an enduring internal torment about her looks. Why are our lives shaped by such limited ideas about beauty? How can we break free of them for a happier, more inclusive future?”

Kellie’s response to the brief was to create an image of Anita holding a mirror that showed a twisted, poignant and beautiful reflection of herself.

I liked the idea of ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?’ and the constant conflict about wanting to be accepted as beautiful. The snakes in the mirror have tones of Medusa, which I loved too.”

Chris Floyd - Idler / Lawrence (Felt / Denim / Go-Kart Mozart / Mozart Estate)

Chris Floyd was commissioned by Idler to capture this awesome series of portraits of pop legend Lawrence at his flat near Old Street in London just before Xmas 2022.

Lawrence is, "the reclusive would-be superstar behind the cult 80s indie band Felt, the 90s Britpop pioneers Denim and the noughties “b-sides only” outfit Go-Kart Mozart. Returning as Mozart Estate, Lawrence has put such topical themes as poverty, homelessness, mindless consumerism and the rise of the cashless society to a novelty pop beat on his first masterpiece, 2023’s Pop-Up! Ker-Ching! And The Possibilities of Modern Shopping".

Phil Fisk - Belle Chen

PHIL FISK recently shot these gorgeous portraits of pianist, composer and rising star BELLE CHEN, whose work, "pinballs between avant-garde, classical, electronica, sound art and various sonic practices."

Her music is often performed on "prepared piano (temporarily altered prior to performance by placing bolts, screws, mutes, rubber erasers, and/or other objects on or between the strings), as well as melodica, synthesizers and found sound.”

The team drew reference to Bjork’s enigmatic style, bringing a less clichéd classical aesthetic to Belle’s portraits - with styling by Vic Twyman and makeup by Rebecca Hampson 🙌✨

Chris Floyd - Felicity Kendal / You

We’re delighted to share these fabulous portraits from Chris Floyd’s recent shoot with her for You Magazine.

At 76 years old, Felicity is currently starring in the 40th Anniversary production of Michael Frayn’s ‘Noises Off’ which opens in London’s West End this month.

Phil Fisk - The Grove / London Short Film Festival

We are delighted to announce that Phil Fisk's documentary film "The Grove", made the Official Selection, and will be showing at the London Short Film Festival on 26th January at Curzon Soho.

Short largely during the first couple of years of the Covid pandemic, Phil's film focusses on "an abandoned pub carpark on the A205 in South London, [where] local kids are creating ramps and an assortment of skate park structures, splicing old gas canisters, wooden planks, pallets, bags of cement, rubble, drinks cans, abandoned sofas - anything and everything, to create their own home-grown skatepark - and likewise establish a safe place for themselves, away from the traffic, the pandemic and authority."

More info here and here - and you can read about the full lineup of events here.

And of course you can watch “The Grove” on our website here. It’s a beautiful, contemplative film - and well worth a watch! 🙌

Phil Fisk - Mike Skinner

Phil shoots Mike Skinner… the subject of a short film (/rockumentary) he’s been working on since 2019, with the first teasers being released in the new year ⚡️.

Phil describes Mike as a “professional disruptor. Dictator, denier and destructor. The king of trash, prince of darkness, the founder of the Cannibals. The loser of his mind. One of a kind. Master of his own downfall and slave to the rhythm of rock n roll. [and also] My neighbour. 👍”

The film promises to be a captivating journey into Mike’s life. We can’t wait to watch!

Chris Floyd - Leona Naess / If A Song

In the mid-lockdown summer of 2020 CHRIS FLOYD shot this lovely film with his good friend, singer/songwriter LEONA NAESS on a remote mountain track in Switzerland.

Here are some very moving words from Leona about the experience... "Thank you @chrisfloyd for jumping on many trains to get to me during the summer of lockdown. All we had was a camera, the mountains and our imagination. I wish I had taken a photo of Chris laying on top of the car, holding his camera (without a steady cam) while someone drove it down a rocky fire road. The concept - we shed our layers as we grow and become, while we are busy chasing our dreams and the people we love. In the end, we learn that we have to let them go, in order to figure it out on our own. I guess the video is a metaphor for growing up. Nothing brings that harsh reality to light more then losing both your parents. I wanted this song to be empowering and anthemic. To inspire someone to get going with living. Its not sad. It’s a force!!!"

It’s now the new single from Leona’s gorgeous, melodic album ‘BROOD X’.
